Deep Fried Tom Yam Chicken has such amazing flavours. The secret to this fantastic flavour is Tom Yam paste. The sour, spicy and tangy flavours from the meat marinated with Tom Yam paste is so incredible, this dish may turn out to be one of your family’s favourites soon.

For this recipe, I have used store bought Tom Yam paste for convenience but you can also choose to make the Tom Yam paste at home. With this Thai Tom Yum Paste, you can enjoy any Asian or Thai inspired dish that uses it almost instantly anytime. Also this Tom Yam paste acts as a fantastic marinade for any kinds of meat as well. So let’s start cooking!

What is Tom Yam Paste?

Tom Yam Paste is a very versatile ingredient used for seasonings and marinades. The essential ingredients of tom yam paste are herbs such as lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime leaves. Other ingredients which are also important, includes Thai chilies, coriander leaf (cilantro), tomatoes, sweet white onions, lime juice, sugar, and fish sauce.

This paste is widely used as a Tom Yum soup base and also in stir-fries, marinades and sauces to give the dish a sour and spicy twist.

What Is Deep Fried Tom Yam Chicken?

Fried Tom Yam Chicken is an Asian inspired Thai Style deep fried chicken dish. The chicken meat can be cut into big or small pieces, then marinated with Tom Yam paste and other flavourful seasonings for about 3 hours in refrigerator. It is then deep fried to crispy and golden brown perfection.

This Tom Yam Fried Chicken is delicious on its own, great as an appetiser or party snack. Or enjoy this with steamed white rice. This flavourful fried chicken is also amazing for sandwiches or wraps. There’s just so many ways to enjoy this fried chicken dish!

Ingredients Needed To Make Fried Tom Yam Chicken

Ingredients:

  • Chicken Whole Legs
  • Cooking Oil for deep frying

Marinade:

  • Tom Yam Paste
  • Egg
  • Sugar
  • Fish Sauce
  • Kafir Lime Leaves (shredded)
  • Lemongrass (chopped)
  • Cooking Oil
  • All-purpose Flour
  • Cornflour

Garnish:

  • Big Onion (shredded)
  • Lime (cut in half)

How To Cook Deep Fried Tom Yam Chicken: An Overview

Marinate Chicken

Add Tom Yam paste and all other seasoning ingredients into cut pieces of chicken. Mix well together and leave to marinade for at about 3 hours in refrigerator. 

Deep Fry Chicken

Let marinated chicken cool to room temperature. Heat up oil for deep frying and fry chicken till golden brown and cooked.

Garnish 

Arrange the fried chicken on serving plate. Sprinkle shredded onion and freshly squeezed lime juice on top before serving.

  • Tom Yum Paste is already salted, depending on the amount of the paste that you use, you have to reduce the amount of fish sauce used, which is also very salty.
  • Taste-test the chicken marinade for salt and spice, adding more fish sauce if you’d like it saltier or more Tom Yum paste if you’d like your chicken spicier.

Ingredients
 

Ingredients:

  • 2 chicken whole legs, deboned, cut into pieces
  • 3 cups cooking oil, for deep frying

Marinade:

  • 2 tbsp Tom Yam paste
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp fish sauce
  • 1 tsp shredded kafir lime leaves
  • ½ tbsp chopped lemongrass
  • ½ tbsp oil
  • tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cornflour

Garnish:

  • 1 onion, shredded
  • 1 lime

    Instructions
     

    Preparing Ingredients:

    • Cut chicken into pieces.
      Wash and clean chicken whole legs. Debone and chop into pieces.
    • Chop lemongrass and shred kafir lime leaves.
      Shred finely kafir lime leaves and chop lemongrass. Set aside for later use.

    Marinate Chicken:

    • Ingredients to marinade chicken.
      Have ready all ingredients needed to marinade chicken.
    • Marinade chicken.
      First add fish sauce, sugar and tom yam paste into the chicken pieces and mix well.
    • Marinate chicken.
      Then add in chop lemongrass, karfir leaves, eggs, plain flour, cornflour and cooking oil. Combine everything together making sure the flour fully coat the chicken. Set aside to marinate for about 3 hours. And we are ready to fry the chicken.

    Deep Fry Tom Yam Chicken:

    • Preparing to deep fry chicken.
      Heat up oil in wok for deep frying. Oil is ready when bubbles appear around a wooden chopstick when immersed in the oil. Deep fry the marinated chicken in batches (if needed).
    • Deep fry tom yam chicken.
      Deep fry till chicken turns golden brown and cooked through. Drain the fried chicken on paper towel. Then transfer to serving plate.

    To Garnish:

    • To garnish, shred an onion and cut a lime.
    • Fried Tom Yam Chicken
      Place the fried chicken on serving plate lined with fresh lettuce, garnish with shredded onion and top with a little lime juice to Enjoy!
    • Serve on its own or with steamed rice and Enjoy!
